Whether our little bunnies understood us, or we simply mirrored our perception and interpretation of thoughts and feelings in their behavior, was still mysterious to us. However, we chose to believe our dear friends completely comprehended what was going around them.
As they displayed in their growing restlessness when we started packing for our forthcoming two-week holiday. They would circle us and our belongings, rummaging through our pile of clothes kept aside for packing, and jump into our laps more frequently.
The guilt bore through us as we were not taking them along this time. It is extremely difficult to find a Pet Boarding for smaller friends, especially in Pune, but a lot of research and hunting had landed us to a reputed and friendly Pet Accommodation which was going to be the temporary abode for our furry friends while we were on a travel frenzy.
We couldn’t forget the look in their eyes when we left them in the careful hands of our Pet Resort Manager. Or was it only a reflection of the grief and guilt we felt deep within!
We ended up having a fun-filled holiday as the regular updates and pictures from the Pet Resort kept us at ease. Golu and Molu definitely seemed to be enjoying their vacay too.
Rejuvenated by the vacation, we were even more ecstatic to see our furballs safe and sound, and greeting us with enthusiasm and eagerness. After the heartwarming reunion, they were superbly happy to return home. As we unpacked and unwounded our holiday mood, we felt so much at home with them binkying all around and chinning the objects (‘This is mine’ act) everywhere. Once everything fell into place and they inspected the house to their heart’s content, ate well, and played with us, they plopped over in quiet slumber!
Sleep Patterns in Rabbits
Contrary to the assumption that rabbits are nocturnal, it is a proven fact that they are Crepuscular, which means they are mostly active during dusk and dawn. They get their much-needed sleep of about 8 to 12 hours during the daytime and at night in short intervals. They are light sleepers.
And don’t let those open eyes fool you! Rabbits can doze off with their eyes open. While sleeping they usually lie still with ears relaxed and their nose would not be twitching.
Various Sleeping Postures in Bunnies
Loaf– This is the most popular position of a rabbit napping when they are comfortable and sleepy. The bunny lies hunched with their limbs tucked underneath their body and appearing like a loaf of bread. Their ears and head remain relaxed and the eyes are partially opened.
Sprawl– This is when the bunny sleeps with their front limbs and hind limbs completely stretched out. A joyful and relaxed bunny would like to sprawl every now and then.
Flop– This is one of the most adorable sleeping positions in bunnies. They will roll on their back or sides and stretch their legs with eyes sometimes closed. If you are unaware of this, you might get startled with the sudden roll-over and even think that your bunny is unconscious. But relax, your rabbit does it only when they are extremely comfortable and happy. It is also a sign that your rabbit trusts you.
Dreaming– Bunnies do appear to be dreaming when they twitch their noses in their sleep and move their limbs randomly. This can happen in any sleeping position but most commonly it is seen while they flop over.
Sitting down– Also known as the brooding-hen position, this is when the bunny falls asleep while on duty. This is mostly done when the rabbit is vigilant.
The sphynx– This position is also very common in cats and dogs where the back is generally hunched and the front paws are stretched. The bunny seems to be ready to take off in this position. When the bunny is tired and just napping up to recharge themselves, they may sleep in this position.
Fun fact– It is difficult to be sure of what is going on in their tiny heads, but sometimes it appears rabbits do dream while sleeping!

It was a pleasure to host Golu and Molu at Pune Pet Park
Thankyou so much!
It’s so wonderful that there are places like Pune Pet Park which can be absolute comfort zones for the pets and for their owners, without the latter having to worry about where to leave them in case of an urgency or otherwise.
The sleeping patterns of Golu and Molu reminded me of my son when he was a toddler…active at dusk and dawn 😃😃
Sonia, Thankyou so much for reading and appreciating 😊
You have a way with kind words that leave such warming effect through your compliments. Thankyou for regularly dropping by, means a lot 💐
oh wow. I had no clue about the pet park being there. It’s surely a relief when the owners need some time for themselves and the pets are taken care of. Sleeping patterns about rabbits was again new information for me. such a beautiful topic you have chosen, Jyoti!
Thankyou so much Chinmayee 🤗 for giving it a read and sharing such lovely thoughts!
