Angika- The Indo-Aryan language from Anga Pradesh

Angika, a language primarily spoken in the Anga region of Bihar, Jharkhand and some parts of West Bengal; is considered to be one of the oldest languages of India. It is an Indo-Aryan language and is written in the Devanagari script. The language has been given the status of “second state language” in Jharkhand since the year 2018. Angika is spoken by the majority of the migrant population residing in many places across the country and globe.

Although the language is not listed in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India, there have been several continuous movements to promote the language and advocate its inclusion in the same.

One such incessant drive towards achieving this goal is ‘Angika Mahotsav’.

Angika Mahotsav was recently held at Bhagalpur, Bihar on 1st and 2nd February 2020 wherein several eminent personalities participated in the event.

Delighted to share that my father, Mr. Kailash Thakur, Retired Joint Commissioner has been an active member of the Organizing Committee of this event. Here are excerpts and glimpses from, before and during the event.

Here is a link to some news updates highlighting the importance of Angika and Anga Pradesh.

Appealing to all Angika-speaking people and communities to come forward and promote our language so that it is listed in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India.
